Abstract

Objectives: the purpose of the study was toanalyze the frequency, characteristics and associated complications of mesiodens in a groupof patients in Turkey.Materials and Methods: The present studyincluded 3782 patients (1590 male, 2192 female),who attended the Department of MaxillofacialRadiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Erciyes Universityfor their dental problems. Panoramic radiographsroutinely obtained during dental examinationsserved as the study basis for detection of theprevalence of mesiodens. In the case of mesiodensdetection additional occlusal radiographs wereobtained from the patients. In addition to age andgender, descriptive characteristics of meziodens, including number, shape, position, complicationcaused by mesiodens were recorded. Results: The prevalence of mesiodens in thepresent study was 2.7% (3.9% male, 1.8% female). The sex ratio was 2.17:1, favoring boys, the ratiowas statistically significant (p<0.001).The majorityof the mesiodens (50%) were conical in shape. Amajority of the mesiodens (62.1%) were verticallyaligned. Inverted and horizontally positions wereobserved in 20.2% and 16.1% of the cases. 17patients had two, and two patients had more thantwo mesiodens. Most of the mesiodens (58.1%)were associated with complications and only 41.9%were asymptomatic. Conclusions: The prevalence of mesiodens wasfound to be high comparable to similar studies inthe literature. The majority of the mesiodens wereimpacted and thus, in case of retention or delayederuption, dentists should bear in mind thatmesiodens may be the cause and early detection andtimely surgical intervention should be kept in mindto avoid unwanted complications.
