Abstract

Abstract

Color science and art should be understood to overcome the difficulties related to the color selection at aesthetic restorative dentistry. Closely matching natural teeth with an artificial restoration can be one of the most challenging procedures in restorative dentistry. Concerning dental ceramic techniques, the principles of light and color is important for the preparation of restorations compatible with the natural color of teeth. Color determination in dentistry can be divided 2 categories: visual and instrumental. Determination of tooth color by visual means is considered highly subjective. Computer aided systems give more objective results than subjective visual examination. For that reason, both visual and instrumental shade matching systems should be used together. This article reviews the scientific principles of color and the factors involved in shade selection for prosthetic teeth.

Keywords: Color, color selection systems, esthetic, color selection.
