Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the amount of calciumhydroxide remaining on canal walls after removalusing manual or rotary instruments as well as theamount of apical debris during calcium hydroxideremoval.Materials and Methods:Twenty-fourextracted maxillary incisors were prepared with Kfiles and filled with calcium hydroxide. Four teethserved as positive and negative controls. Theremaining teeth were divided into two groups:master apical file group and Protaper Universalrotary instrument group. During removalprocedures, citric acid was used as an irrigant.Apically extruded debris wascollected andstatistically compared between the groups. Then theteeth were longitudinally sectioned, photographedusing stereomicroscope, and the images wereanalyzed using software. Data were statisticallyanalyzed using one-way Anova. Results: In both groups, a measurable amountof apically extruded debris was observed duringcalcium hydroxide removal. The statistical analysisshowed that there were no significant differencesbetween techniques in terms of the amount ofapically extruded debris as well as in terms of theremoval of the calcium hydroxide. Conclusions: No matter the technique, apicallyextruded debris during calcium hydroxide removaloccurs. None of this study’s techniques completelyremoved calcium hydroxide from the root canalwalls.
