Unilateral surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion

Abstract

The treatment of skeletally unilateral posteriorcrossbite is a more difficult anomally especially inmature patients. Rapid maxiler expansion which iseasily practiced in young patients as the treatmentof this problem, is practiced in mature patients bymeans of corticotomies in the maxilla because ofthe increase in articulations' rigidity caused bymaxilla and face bones. Bilateral expansionprovided by this way also causes expansion in theside where no narrowness exists, and this extendsthe time of treatment. In this case presentation, wehave presented the orthodontic treatment of a 16years old female patient following an unilateralkorikomomi and rapid maxillary expansion. Afterexpansion, a good occlusion and esthetical smile isacquired without causing excessive expansion inthe side where no narrowness exists.
