Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the incidence, morphology and localization of antral septa with computed tomography and panoramic radiography.

Materials and Methods: 2390 maxillary sinuses examined radiographically with computed tomography and panoramic radiography retrospectively. The morphology and localization of sinus septa is also evaluated by panoramic radiography.

Results: The sinus septa prevalance was determined as 13.7% with computed tomography and 18% with panoramic radiography. The maxillary sinus septa is more commonly found in edentulous maxillae than in dentate maxilla. The septa is mostly localized at the middle part of the sinus and the size of the septa mostly changed between 6-10 mm.

Conclusion: Detailed knowledge about location, morphology and height of antral septa is clinically important to reduce the rate of complications when maxillary sinus surgery, i.e. sinus flor elevation, is carried out.
