Relationship Between Dental Profession Perception and Medical Values Perception Among Dental Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between dental profession perception and medical values perception among dental students and to examine these variables according to selected sociodemographic and educational factors. Materials and Methods: This observational cross-sectional study included 464 dental students enrolled at the Faculty of Dentistry, Sivas Cumhuriyet University. Data were collected using a sociodemographic information form, the Dental Profession Perception Scale (DPPS), and the Medical Values Perception Scale (MVPS). Descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis were used. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results: The mean age of the participants was 21.78 ± 2.09 years, and 64.4% were female. The mean total DPPS score was 3.81 ± 0.63, and the mean total MVPS score was 74.01 ± 13.63. Internal consistency coefficients were high for both scales and their subdimensions. Students who had chosen dentistry willingly had significantly higher status, scientific dimension, and total DPPS scores. Parental education level was significantly associated with patient–physician relationship, empathy, and total MVPS scores. A moderate positive correlation was found between total DPPS and total MVPS scores (r=0.585, p<0.001). The humanistic dimension of the DPPS showed the strongest association with total MVPS score (r=0.583, p<0.001). Regression analysis showed that total DPPS score significantly predicted total MVPS score (β=0.724, p<0.001), explaining 52.4% of the variance. Conclusions: Dental students with more positive perceptions of the dental profession also demonstrated stronger perceptions of medical values. These findings suggest that strengthening professional perception may support value-oriented professional development in dental education.
