Evaluation and comparison of TheraCal PT and Biodentine in primary tooth pulpotomy: A clinical and radiographic study

Abstract

Abstract Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of TheraCal PT and Biodentine pulpotomy treatments. Materials and Methods: This randomized research was conducted on 32 teeth (16 children) aged between 4 and 9 years. Patients were randomly assigned to pulpotomy treatment groups. After pulpotomy treatments, all pulpotomized teeth were restored with stainless steel crowns and assessed clinically and radiologically at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. The data were recorded and analyzed statistically. Results: The Biodentine and TheraCal PT groups showed 100% clinical success at the end of 12 months. While the Biodentine and TheraCal PT groups showed 87.5% radiographic success at the end of 3 months, the success rate was 81.3% for Biodentine and 50% for TheraCal PT. However, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups. At the end of 12 months, Biodentine showed 68.8% success, and TheraCal PT showed 0% success. Therefore, a statistically significant difference was revealed between the groups (p<0.001). Conclusion: Thus, it was concluded that residual monomers of resin-based materials still cause problems in pulpotomy treatments. Pulpotomy treatments are the most known dental treatment in pediatric dentistry and this study compares the usage of a new calcium silicate cement, TheracalPT and gives an opinion about the usage resin based medicaments in pulpotomy treatments.
