Influence of Daylight Exposure on the Color Stability and Staining Susceptibility of a Composite Resin

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the colour change of a composite resin following daylight exposure, simulating a clinical situation in which the composite remains in the mixing plate with the light-blocking plate left open during application. Additionally, the effect of polishing on colour recovery after coffee-induced staining was assessed. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight disc-shaped composite samples (NeoSpectra ST, Dentsply Sirona, Germany) were prepared and exposed to daylight for 2, 4, or 6 minutes, with a control group which kept with light blocking plate covered. After 24-hour hydration in distilled water at 37°C, baseline colour values (T0) were recorded using a spectrophotometer. All groups, except the control, were immersed in a coffee solution for seven days, and colour measurements were repeated (T1). Subsequently, all stained samples were polished with Sof-Lex discs (3M ESPE, USA) following the manufacturer’s instructions, and colour readings were taken again (T2). Data were analysed using Shapiro–Wilk and One-Way ANOVA with Tukey post hoc tests. Results: Daylight exposure did not significantly affect the degree of staining among the experimental groups (p>0.05). All exposed groups showed significantly greater discolouration than the control (p<0.05). Polishing significantly reduced staining in all groups (p<0.001), though it was least effective in the 6-minute exposure group. Conclusion: Limited daylight exposure before polymerisation did not increase susceptibility to coffee staining. Polishing effectively reduced discolouration, yet colour changes in all experimental groups remained clinically unacceptable.
