Adverse Events of Procedural Sedation in Pediatric Dentistry: Scoping Review

Abstract

Aim: This Scoping Review (SR) was developed with the aim of mapping, evaluating, and synthesizing the current evidence available on adverse events associated with the sedation of children undergoing dental treatments. Methods: This SR was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, carried out in the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and SciELO database, and used the descriptors: “procedural sedation,” “conscious sedation,” “pediatric dentistry,” “adverse events,” and related terms associated with the boolean operators AND and OR. Articles that exclusively addressed the guiding research question were included, while duplicates and those not aligned with the theme were excluded. The research was registered in the Open Science Framework (OSF). Results: Initially, 118 articles were identified, 66 were selected, resulting in 28 that fully met the eligibility criteria. Final Considerations: The studies included in this systematic review indicate a variety of adverse events, with frequency and severity varying according to the sedative agent used and the characteristics of the patients. Continuing research in this area is essential to develop more robust and safe guidelines for the sedation of children in dental settings.
