Examining the Impact of Trauma on the Anxiety Levels of Dentistry Students

Öz

Aim: Dental anxiety and traumatic dental history were studied among dental students of different classes in a cross-sectional analysis.
Methods: The fourth and fifth grade students of the Faculty of Dentistry at Biruni University were included in the study with an equal number of students (n=300) from both classes, for a total of 300 individuals at 27 February-27 March 2023. Digitally questionnaire forms were generated in two parts. Initially, there were questions to determine sociodemographic information and dental trauma history. Secondly, the dental anxiety measurement scale is presented. Using the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS), dental anxiety levels were determined, and a cut-off value of 13 was identified to signify excessive dental anxiety. The data were analyzed using the Mann Whitney U and Chi-Square tests.
Results: The MDAS scores of women (8.57±2.76) were found to be higher than men (7.84±2.88) (p<0.05). Although it was determined that the fourth grades had a higher level of dental fear than the fifth grades, no statistically significant difference was found (p=0.847). In terms of MDAS scores, there was a statistically significant difference between genders in fifth grade (p<0.05), but not in the fourth grade (p=0.709). The number of individuals who were under pressure from their families to go to the dentist as a children and who had a traumatic dentist experience was found to be higher in the fifth grade than in the fourth grade (p=0.132).
Conclusion: Although traumatic experiences derived from a family or dentist negatively affect dental anxiety, this anxiety can be eliminated in dental students gradually.

Öz

Amaç: Bu kesitsel çalışmada, farklı sınıflardaki dişhekimliği öğrencileri arasında dental anksiyete düzeyi değerlendirildi ve dental anksiyete seviyesinin travmatik dental geçmiş ile bağlantısı olup olmadığı irdelendi.
Yöntem: 27 Şubat-27 Mart 2023 tarihleri arasında Biruni Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi’ndeki dördüncü ve beşinci sınıf öğrencilerinin katıldığı çalışmada her iki sınıftan eşit sayıda (n=300) öğrenciye yer verildi ve toplamda 300 öğrenci ile çalışma gerçekleştirildi. Dijital ortamda hazırlanan anket formları iki kısım halinde oluşturuldu. Formun ilk kısmında sosyodemografik verilerin ve travmatik dental deneyim geçmişinin tespitine yönelik sorular bulunurken; ikinci kısımda dental anksiyete seviyesini ölçen skala yer aldı. Dental anksiyete seviyeleri Modifiye Dental Anksiyete Skalası (MDAS) ile ölçüldü ve yüksek dental anksiyeteyi belirlemek üzere cut-off değeri ≥13 olarak belirlendi. Veriler analiz edilirken Mann Whitney U ve Ki-Kare testlerinden faydalanıldı.
Bulgular: Kadınların MDAS skorları 8,57±2,76 erkeklere göre 7,84±2,88 daha yüksek bulundu (p<0,05). Dördüncü sınıfların beşinci sınıflara göre daha yüksek dental korku seviyesine sahip olduğu tespit edilse de istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı farklılığa rastlanmadı (p=0,847). MDAS skorları açısından beşinci sınıflarda cinsiyete göre istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı farklılık varken (p<0,05); dördüncü sınıflarda benzer farklılığa rastlanmadı (p=0,709). Çocukken diş hekimine gitme konusunda ailesinden baskı gören ve travmatik bir diş hekimi deneyimi yaşayan bireylerin sayısı beşinci sınıflarda dördüncü sınıflara göre daha yüksek bulundu (p=0,132).
Sonuç: Aile veya hekim kaynaklı travmatik deneyimler dental anksiyeteyi olumsuz yönde etkilese de diş hekimliği öğrencilerinde bu anksiyete giderek bertaraf edilebilir.
