      ABSTRACT

Pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) are electronic devices that emit electrical signals. These devices are sensitive to the electronic signals around their enviroment. The number of patients carrying these devices is increasing day after day globally and in our country  Most of these patients  consist of old individuals, who also visit dental offices. Tooth and root surface cleaning devices, ultrasonic instruments used for bone cutting, apex locators used for root length measurement, vitalometres evaluating pulp vitality by electricity, battery operated curing ligth devices and electrocauteries may potentially interfere with pacemakers and ICDs. This article reviews the studies evaluating the effects of commonly used dental devices on patients carrying pacemakers and ICDs.

Keywords: Cardiac pacemaker, defibrilaltor,  electromagnetic interference, dental equipment.
