Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the "Super Kid" intervention, which was prepared with an illustrated cognitive behavioral technique to reduce the anxiety of children who were admitted for outpatient services, had intravenous access, and had blood drawn.
Methods: The study was conducted with children aged 5-10 years who were admitted to the outpatient services of a children's hospital and underwent intravenous cannula. It was designed as a control group, pre-test, mid-test, and post-test. The study included 72 children (experimental group = 36, control group = 36). Children's anxiety was assessed with the Child Anxiety Scale-State. "Super Kid" cards and posters with superhero analogy prepared with cognitive behavioral techniques were used as intervention.
Results: Children in the experimental and control groups were similar in age (t =.571; p=.570) and gender (X2 =.225; p=.635). It was found that more than 50% of the children did not receive information about painful procedures. During intravenous catheterization, children in the intervention group experienced less anxiety than children in the control group (p<.05).
Conclusion: Super Kid" illustration cards and posters prepared with cognitive behavioral technique, giving information to the child about the procedures, were found to be effective in reducing procedural anxiety in children.
