Aim: The term staphne bone cavity (SBC) describes a localized bony defect that mostly affects the mandibular bone. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of SBC in patients admitted to our clinic, to describe the features of SBC on panoramic radiographs and to determine possible characteristics.
Material and Methods: Panoramic radiographs of 17,258 patients who applied to Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University for various reasons between 2019 and 2022 were retrospectively scanned. Among 16,115 panoramic radiographs included in the study, the age and gender of the patients with SBC were recorded and the side of defect, the shape of defect, marginal sclerosis, degree of internal radiolucency, locularity, relationship with mandibular canal, relationship with inferior cortex of the mandible were evaluated, horizontal and vertical dimension measurements was recorded.
Results: SBC was detected in 15 (0.09 %) of the 16,115 images examined. The most common radiographic features; oval shape (73.3 %), thick sclerotic border (53.3 %), inhomogeneous radiolucent content (53.3 %). Only 1 of the defects was multiloculated. The most common topographic relationship between defect and mandibular canal was defect located below the inferior wall.
Conclusion: This study is important as it explains the basic imaging features of SBC in panoramic radiographs, which are important radiographic examinations in routine dental practice.
