Intermittent catheterization is a preferred treatment method in individuals with bladder dysfunction due to neurological or non-neurological causes. Intermittent catheterization is the process of emptying the bladder, which can be performed by the patients themselves or by their relatives without the need for a continuous drainage bag. Intermittent catheterization, which is a technique that can be performed by people of all age groups, including four-year-old children, provides the patient with the ability to maintain independence as it gives the individual the opportunity to empty their bladder whenever or wherever they want and to perform self-care. This article reviews The Clean Intermittent Urethral Catheterization in Adults Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Nurses, published in 2020. Guidelines include indications, contraindications, complications, possible infection, impact on patient quality of life, intermittent catheterization management, and patient education.
In this article, it is aimed to share evidence-based practices on infections related to intermittent catheterization, patient quality of life, intermittent catheterization management, and patient education for health care providers.
