Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of mineral trioxide aggregate-based root canal sealer against Enterococcus faecalis.

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial properties of epoxy-resin (AH Plus) and mineral trioxide aggregate based root canal sealers (MTA Fillapex) against Enterococcus faecalis.
Material &Method: The inocula of Enterococcus faecalis was prepared from 12 h tryptone soy broth and suspensions were adjusted to 0.5 Mc.Farland (1.5x 10-8 CFU/mL) standard turbidity. The inoculum was spread on the blood agar broths. The freshly mixed sealers were placed into the prepared wells on the agar plates. After incubation periods of 24, 48 and 72 h the zone of growth inhibition were measured and recorded. Data were analysed using paired samples t-test and Student's t test. The testing was performed at 95% confi¬dence level (p < 0.05).
Results: There was no significant difference between the sealers with respect to antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis (p>0.05). There was a significant difference between root canal sealers with respect to antimicrobial activity in different incubation times (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It was found that both sealers, AH Plus and MTA Fillapex have an antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis.

Mineral trioksit aggregate içerikli kök kanal dolgu patının Enterococcus faecalise karşı antimikrobiyal etkinliğinin değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, epoksi-resin (AH Plus) ve mineral trioksit aggregate esaslı (MTA Fillapex) kök kanal dolgu patlarının Enterococcus faecalise karşı antimikrobiyal etkinliklerinin karşılaştırılmasıdır.
Materyal-Metod: Enterococcus faecalis izolatı triptik soy buyyon besiyerinde 12 saatlik kültüründen Mc Farland standart bulanıklık 0,5 (1.5x 10-8 CFU mL) eşeline denk süspansiyonu hazırlandı. Bu süspansiyondan kanlı agar besiyerlerine ekimler yapıldı. Hazırlanan kök kanal dolgu patları besiyerlerinde açılan çukurlara dolduruldu. 24, 48 ve 72. saat inkübasyon sürelerinin sonunda inhibisyon zonları ölçülerek kaydedildi. Veriler Eşleştirilmiş t testi ve Student's t testi kullanılarak istatistiksel olarak analiz edildi. Analizler % 95 güven aralığında gerçekleştirildi (p < 0.05). Bulgular: Kök kanal dolgu patlarının Enterococcus faecalise karşı antimikrobiyal etkinlikleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunamadı (p>0.05). Kök kanal dolgu patlarının inkübasyon sürelerindeki antimikrobiyal etkinlikleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulundu (p<0.05).
Sonuç: AH Plus ve MTA Fillapex kök kanal patlarının her ikisinin de Enteroccocus faecalise karşı antimikrobiyal etkiye sahip olduğu görülmüştür.
