The Effect of Nursing Students’ General Self-Efficacy on Gender Roles

Year 2020, Volume: 4 Issue: 1, 1 - 19, 26.06.2020

Abstract

Gender
roles define the features and behaviors traditionally attributed to the both
sex. This study was therefore designed to determine the relationship between
the general self-efficacy and gender roles of students studying in a faculty of
nursing and the factors affecting their gender roles. The study universe
consists of nursing students studying in the 2018-2019 school year in the
Faculty of Nursing of a university. No sample was chosen in the study. The
personal data form, gender roles attitude scale and general self-efficacy scale
were used to collect data by researchers. The analyses of the data obtained in
the study were conducted using SPSS 20 statistical analysis program. As a
result of the study, students’ general self-efficacy was found to be at
midlevel, while they adopt the traditional attitude related to gender roles;
besides, factors affecting students' gender roles attitude were found as sex,
grade, and mother's educational status; furthermore, no relationship was found
between the general self-efficacy and gender roles attitude. In order to create
awareness about gender roles, it may be suggested that gender equality courses
should be taught in all departments of universities.
