KIBRIS TÜRK POPÜLASYONUNDA UZAMIŞ STYLOID PROÇES PREVALANSI: RETROSPEKTIF DEĞERLENDIRME

Year 2020, Volume: 47 Issue: 1-3, 17 - 25, 31.12.2020

Abstract

Sonuç: Styloid proçes kalsifikasyonu yaşla birlikte artmaktadır ancak kalsifikasyon görülen hastalardan sadece 3’ünde semptom görülmüş olup Eagle sendromu tanısı konulmuştur.

PREVALENCE OF HYPERTROPHIC STYLOID PROCESS IN TURKISH CYPRIOT POPULATION: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Year 2020, Volume: 47 Issue: 1-3, 17 - 25, 31.12.2020

Abstract

Aim: The aim of present study was to determine the prevalence of the styloid process type in the Turkish Cypriot population on panoramic radiography and to evaluate Eagle syndrome.
Materials and Method: Panoramic images of a total of 3000 patients (1500 males, 1500 females) between the ages of 18-87 (mean age 32.6) who referred to our clinic for various reasons were retrospectively evaluated. The classification was made by dividing patients with calcification into 7 subgroups according to the length of the styloid process (SP) and into 3 subgroups in accordance with the pattern of the elongation of the styloid process as an elon-gated styloid process (type I), pseudoarticular styloid process (type II) and segmented styloid process III). The relationship between age, gender and SP types was determined.
Results: Elongated styloid process was detected in a total of 1600 patients (789 males, 811 females) in all radiographs examined, 3 cases (2 males, 1 female) of them were symptomatic and diagnosed with Eagle syndrome. Type 2 was the most common styloid process type with an incidence of 41.7%, and the least common type was Type 5 with an incidence of 1.9%. Elongated SP prevalence was found to be 53.3% in our study group. No significant difference was found between male and female patients in terms of styloid process types. (p> 0.05)
Conclusion: Styloid calcification increases with age, but only 3 patients with calcification showed symptoms and Eagle syndrome was diagnosed.
